EN12254

Screens for laser working places - Safety requirements and testing
This standard specifies the functional requirements and product labeling methods applicable to temporary and permanent screens for protection against laser radiation.

Type of laser used for testing

  • D (CW lasers): Lasers that emit power continuously.
  • I (Pulsed laser): A laser that blinks repeatedly at fine time intervals.
  • R (Giant pulse laser): Pulsed laser with amplified high energy
  • M (mode-coupled pulsed laser): Mode-coupled pulsed laser

Scale Number

Scale numbers are classified into 10 levels from AB1 to AB10, and in combination with wavelength and laser type, specify test conditions and required values.

Required Test Values

  • Spectral transmittance (shielding performance)
  • Durability to laser irradiation
  • Resistance to ultraviolet rays (stability)
  • Resistance to high temperature (stability)
  • Mechanical strength
  • Ignitability
※Resistance to laser irradiation (excerpt from EN12254 Table 2)
①:Wavelength of laser  ②:Type of laser and required pulse width  ③:Scale number (magnitude)
④:Spectral transmittance  ⑤:Laser irradiation power density and energy density
Example) In case of 1064nm D AB6, it withstands the following tests.
Type of laserD (CW laser)
Power density of laser2.5×107W/m2
Duration of laser irradiation100 sec.
